«American Dream» installation
Burning Man Festival, Black Rock City, Nevada, USA. 2008
It is hard to overestimate the way United States affects other countries. Everything that happens in US is reflected in this or that way on every country and people all over the world. In “American Dream” the reflective nature of those relationships is depicted quite literally.
The entire installation represents the map of the world. The map of United States is made out of lights and surrounded by other countries outlines cut out of mirrored plastic. Twinkling lights of the US are constantly reflected and multiplied by other countries.
When participants are walking along the installation, they find themselves caught caught and disoriented, as they see not only reflections of the lights but also multiple flashing reflections of themselves and others. No one can get close to the installation without actually becoming a part of it.
